Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoody, Women’s

The Outdoor Research Ferrosi softshell jacket is an excellent option for that awkward season that is not quite spring, though not quite summer.  Weighing in at a scant 11.8oz (women’s size M) and stuffing down into it’s own left pocket, there is no reason to get caught up freezing on that multi-pitch route, for which you set off in sunny skies with only a t-shirt on, but clouds threaten to rain on your parade five pitches off the deck.  The Ferrosi softshell is a minimalist jacket option which is breathable and weather resistant to light wind, rain or snow while not inhibiting mobility.

At $130, the Outdoor Research Ferrosi hoody is one of the most affordable of its class and stylish enough to wear at the pub, post alpine mission.

For reference, I am 5’8″, 135 pounds and I tested the Outdoor Research Women’s Ferrosi Hoody in a size medium.  The activities they were tested in were cross-country skiing, hiking and multi-pitch climbing.

On-Sight

  • Jacket stuffs into its left pocket which is outfitted with its own keyclip (albeit small) to attach directly to your harness, no additional heavy carabiner required, in theory (this depends on the width of your harness loops).

  • Lightweight and breathable, while still maintaining weather resistant properties to light wind, sprinkles and snow.
  • Fully adjustable hood and drawcord hem.
  • Bad-ass zippers, a feature I have come to expect from Outdoor Research
  • Durable.  Go ahead and scum up that chimney or awkwardly walrus that mantle top-out.
  • Fit is a little longer than other brands which help it stay put under a harness, eliminating my biggest jacket pet peeve.

Project

  • zippered hand pockets are not harness compatible. making for frustrating/non-existant access to pockets while climbing.
  • fabric protects best against moderate elements.  For winds exceeding 15mph, a true softshell is preferred to this lightweight option.

 

Bottom Line – Outdoor Research developed an affordable option for those seeking play time in the in-between seasons.  The Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoody is best for moderate weather backcountry ski/splitboard touring, cross-country skiing, bu infested hiking, spring/summer or spring/fall climbing and summer alpine climbing.
